Epoxy Floor Coating: The Perfect Combination of Durability and Aesthetics

Epoxy floor coating is the process of transforming the surface of existing concrete or screed floors into a high-performance polymer. This process not only protects the floor but also provides it with a monolithic (single piece), harder, and ultra-durable structure through a chemical material, the epoxy resin system.

Today, it is frequently preferred not only for factories and parking garages but also for offices and homes as part of a modern design understanding. The reason is simple: Epoxy offers both industrial durability and aesthetic flexibility at the same time.

The Secret to Durability: The Epoxy and Silica Sand Composition

The secret to epoxy floor coatings having a "durable" and "hard" structure is not just the resin itself, but also the aggregates (fillers) used within the system. At this point, high-performance epoxy systems derive their strength from specially qualified silica sand.

While the resin provides the coating's chemical resistance and adhesion, the silica sand forms the system's "body" and mechanical resistance:

  1. Abrasion and Impact Resistance: Silica sand of specific grain sizes is mixed into the epoxy mortar to significantly increase the floor's resistance to abrasion and impact.
  2. Surface Hardness: It makes the floor harder and more resistant to scratches.
  3. Non-Slip (Antiskip) Surfaces: Especially on ramps, in wet areas, or in production zones, silica sand is broadcast onto the surface while the epoxy application is still wet to create non-slip floors.
  4. Economical Thickness: In coatings requiring high thickness (self-leveling or mortar), it optimizes cost while increasing durability.

In short, it is not possible for an epoxy coating to reach its full potential without silica sand.

Why is Epoxy Floor Coating Preferred?

  • Aesthetic Versatility: It is compatible with different decorative tools, color pigments, and even 3D designs. It offers gloss, matte, or semi-matte options.
  • Full Durability: It provides excellent protection against chemicals, acids, oils, and stains.
  • Hygiene and Easy Cleaning: Thanks to its monolithic (seamless) structure, it does not harbor bacteria or dirt and is extremely easy to clean.
